Description
This course helps jurisdictions develop a plan to effectively respond to a large food emergency. The goal of the course is to encourage multidisciplinary, multiagency planning to quickly mobilize resources in a food emergency. The course uses a whole community approach combined with NIMS, the Incident Command System (ICS), and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to respond to food emergencies. Participants will learn how to identify a food emergency that should trigger a response; apply the principles of ICS; determine roles during a food emergency; identify resources; successfully communicate with other agencies and the public; and what to do during the recovery phase. The course combines facilitated discussion and scenario-based training to give participants tangible experience applicable to a real-world food emergency.

Additional Information
**MUST REGISTER THRU LSU ** https://train.ncbrt.lsu.edu/Student/Register?ClassID=33893 ACCESS CODE:NCBRT447 Strategies for a Community Response is a management-level course that teaches participants how to manage food emergencies with a whole community approach using the National Incident Management System (NIMS). Participants will understand how the principles of the Incident Command System (ICS) and multiagency coordination, such as emergency operation center (EOC) activation, can reduce the effects of a food emergency. Participants will manage a food emergency scenario using the guidelines and strategies of the command and coordination component of the NIMS. The food emergency scenario progresses with every module, beginning with Module 2, from the point that a possible foodborne illness is detected. The food emergency scenario will progress throughout the modules from surveillance and into the transition to recovery. In Module 7, participants will engage in an after-action discussion to assess their current preparedness for a food emergency and the value of using principles and components of the NIMS, particularly adding the emergency management discipline as a response partner. Assess credible surveillance systems and the triggers they produce to enhance preparedness for and response to food emergencies. Develop appropriate response action plans to mitigate the effects of a food emergency. Develop communication and coordination strategies to minimize the effects of a food emergency. Manage the transition of resources from a food emergency response environment to strategies and activities essential for recovery from a food emergency. Evaluate the effectiveness of a food emergency response by determining strengths and weaknesses and by defining tangible steps to improve future food emergency responses.
