Name G-290 Basic Public Information Officer (PIO) : ( G-290)
Description This training will equip participants with many of the skills needed to be full or part-time Public Information Officers (PIOs). These include oral and written communications, understanding and working with the media, and basic tools and techniques needed to perform effectively.
PreRequisite Required: FEMA IS-29 (Public Information Officer Awareness), available at this link: Strongly recommended, though not required, are the following National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses: IS-100.B (Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS), IS-200.B (ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents), IS-700.A (NIMS – An Introduction), IS-800.B (National Response Framework – An Introduction)
Target Audience Full and part-time public information officers from all disciplines
The primary audience for this training are individuals who have public information responsibilities as their main job or as an auxiliary function at the state, tribal, local, or territorial level of government
Additional Information Course will be conducted 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day. This course is intended for public information officers who are new to the field or less experienced, or established PIOs who want to refresh their training. The course emphasis is on the basic skills and knowledge needed for public safety, emergency management and government/municipal public information activities. Topics include: communication tools, strategic communications, news release writing skills, public speaking, conducting interviews and news conferences, and social media awareness. This is an elective course in the Advanced Professional Series program.
