PER-405 De-Escalation Strategies and Professional Policing
Today, more than ever, law enforcement officers must recognize the link between professionalism and officer safety. De-Escalation Strategies and Professional Policing provides effective tools to de-escalate encounters between the public and officers. In addition, the course teaches strategies to avoid escalation when possible. This course uses scenarios frontline officers may face daily. The scenarios will test participants¿ ability to recognize situations where de-escalation is possible. Participants will employ tactics learned in the course to de-escalate and intervene. The course gives participants opportunities to enhance response skills to better respond to calls while maintaining officer safety and professionalism.

Course Objective
•At the end of this course, participants will be able to: Describe how de-escalation and intervention benefits all law enforcement professionals •Explain how impaired thinking is a significant barrier to successful de-escalation •Identify symptoms of a behavioral health crisis that may escalate an interaction with law enforcement •Assess and de-escalate a person in crisis at a police incident
•Describe the importance of officer intervention, duty to intervene, and desire to help
•Develop a plan to mitigate risk or threat in an emotionally charged incident
•Apply tactical de-escalation techniques like PATROL
