Name G-386 Mass Fatalities Incident Response : ( G-386)
Description This course prepares local and State response personnel and other responsible agencies and professionals to handle mass fatalities effectively and to work with the survivors in an emergency or disaster. Selection Criteria: This course is designed for personnel with a role to play in a mass fatality incident. This would include coroners, medical examiners, funeral directors, heads of first response agencies (fire, police, EMS, etc.) planners, and emergency management personnel.
PreRequisite FEMA does not require formal prerequisites for G-386, but participants are strongly encouraged to have: IS-100 (ICS-100) IS-200 (ICS-200) IS-700 (NIMS) IS-800 (National Response Framework) Because the course references ICS structure, EOC coordination, and NIMS resource processes, completion of these foundational courses is recommended.
Target Audience This course is designed for personnel with responsibilities related to emergency management, fatality management, or coordination during multi-agency incidents, including: Emergency Management (county, municipal, state) Medical Examiner/Coroner staff Public Health and Epidemiology personnel Law Enforcement agencies Fire Rescue and EMS Healthcare organizations and hospital emergency coordinators Public Information Officers (PIOs) Mass Care, Behavioral Health, and Human Services partners Funeral directors, mortuary services, and DMORT partners Volunteer and NGO partners involved in family assistance or victim services
Additional Information FEMA G-386 provides emergency management personnel and partner agencies with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively plan for and respond to a mass fatality incident (MFI). The course introduces the operational, logistical, legal, and public health considerations associated with managing large numbers of decedents when local resources are overwhelmed. Instruction includes the roles and responsibilities of the Medical Examiner/Coroner’s Office, emergency management, public health, law enforcement, and the family assistance center. Participants work through scenario-based activities that reinforce coordination, decision-making, and resource management during an MFI. Park in the rear of Headquarters in any unmarked spot -- class will be in the EOC at 8am to 5pm.
