Objectives
By the end of the training course, attendees will be able to
• define the concepts of disaster epidemiology and the public health consequences of natural disasters,
• describe how disaster epidemiology principles and methods can be applied to emergency situations,
• identify the importance of morbidity and mortality surveillance during a disaster,
• define different types of surveillance systems and the conditions that call for their use,
• list key lessons learned from past experiences during disasters,
• describe CASPER and when to conduct a CASPER,
• explain why a multi-stage cluster sampling design is used in CASPER and implement cluster sampling methodology in a field setting,
• design a CASPER questionnaire to obtain information about the health status of a community,
• select appropriate households to survey when given a map of a cluster,
• understand how to analyze and interpret results of a CASPER,
• define the basic steps for an outbreak investigation,
• recognize factors indicating that an outbreak is potentially a result of a toxic agent, and
• demonstrate how to apply outbreak investigation steps to a toxic agent outbreak.

- Target audience: Public Health staff involved in Epidemiology, Environmental Health, Disease Surveillance and Investigation, Public Health Preparedness, Infection Control Practitioners and other Health Response partners
This workshop is an effort by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Florida Department of Health to provide an opportunity for local and regional partners to gain information, provide input, and consolidate planning on critical disaster epidemiology activities It is meant to strengthen preparedness in Region 7 (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties) to better respond to and recover from any environmental disaster or toxicological outbreak

Class will be starting at 8AM and ending at 5PM. Please arrive early to go through security.
The training will be both didactic and hands-on. Please bring your laptops ( if able) for part of the training.
Classroom can turn cold at times, bring a coat or jacket just in case.
