Description
SKYWARN is a program developed and taught by National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists and consists of trained weather spotters who report severe and hazardous weather to help in the weather warning process. SKYWARN Spotter reports provide vital "ground truth" to the NWS
PreRequisite
REGISTRATION: To register for the course, contact Robin Terrill, Broward County's Skywarn Coordinator at email n4hhp@comcast.net and enroll by providing the following information in your email: • Name, • Phone number, • Email address, and • Mailing address where you can be reached. The instructor will be a representative from the National Weather Service (NWS) – Miami Office
Target Audience
SKYWARN Training is geared towards anyone with an interest in public safety and communications during extreme weather events
The class is intended for those interested in becoming a Storm Spotter or those who are spotters already and wish to take a refresher course to sharpen their skills
Classes are for a combination beginners through advanced Storm Spotters will be taught in a combined class by one or more meteorologists with the National Weather Service (NWS)
Training is required in order to be a Storm Spotter
Suggested Audience: SKYWARN classes are ideal for amateur radio operators, emergency management staff, Red Cross volunteers, CERT, firefighters, students, or anyone who is interested and wants to serve
Attendees must be at least 14 years old and accompanied by an adult
Note: The class will be canceled on short notice should the weather not be conducive to travel
Additional Information
Class will start promptly at 9:30am and end around 2:30pm, please arrive early to go through security. A form of identity will be required to enter the facility. Please bring a jacket or sweater since the room can be cold at times. Lunch is up to the attendee so bring your lunch with a drink(s).
